I originally started browsing this website years ago because I thought I was destined to be a Pure Math guy for life and had to overcome the obstacle of the Mathematics GRE, but as more time passed I realized that Applied Statistics was more of what I was interested in. This site seems to be lacking Stats/Biostats profiles from what I've seen (and understandably so as these programs often don't require the subject test) so hopefully my posting helps people who are also interested in Stats and/or are flexible and looking for info on alternative areas of Mathematics.

I know most of you are probably saying that I am shooting myself in the foot by applying to so few schools, but I have a significant "two body problem" going on. I got engaged last year and have no intention of uprooting my fiance and moving us away from both of our families just so I can make a third of what she does. On a related note, this will be my third and final try to be accepted to a PhD program in math. At a certain point I'll just start pushing towards a tenure track position at a teaching college.

Overall, I'm a bit nervous, as my gpa is a bit lower than everyone elses :P I had really bad semester last spring (2.3) and a few semesters where I got straight B's, so it's kinda hard to recover from that. Hopefully I applied to enough schools to hedge my bets. Good luck everyone!

@winterman62.... you don't really have to worry about your GPA so much. I have a friend whose father was a member of the selection committee of his university last year, though in a different department, but he reassured me that the selection committee looks for much more than just GPA. They try to seek qualities in you that can ascertain your determination and persistence at continuing research. May be your research experiences and other points will carry far more weight in that regard.
So let's just apply and let's not fret anymore :)

Undergrad Institution: Small, but well respected liberal arts
Major: Math
Minor: Chemistry, Pre-Med
GPA: 3.32, (3.41 in major)
Type of Student: Domestic White Female

Grad Institution: NYU (Courant) - Masters Degree
Major: Math
GPA: 3.74

GRE General Test:
Q: 790 (90%)
V: 550 (69%)
W: 4.5 (73%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M:
610 (39%) Not sure what to say about that...

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Undergrad Thesis (presented at student conference), Master's Thesis
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Not really.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've been teaching math at a top private high school in NYC for the past 7 years
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm sort of an unorthodox candidate, I have a master's from courant, which I did part time. One of my recs is from a pretty well known topologist at NYU and another is from a professor at CUNY. I also have many years teaching math. No idea if any of this will help me...

Applying to Where:

CUNY - Grad Center - Accepted 4/19
Stony Brook - Rejected 3/18
Rutgers (New Brunswick) - Rejected 2/19
Wesleyan - Rejected 4/25
Drexel - Accepted 3/5
Temple - Accepted 2/15
Bryn Mawr - Rejected 3/22
UConn - Accepted 3/4 - Attending!
Stevens Institute of Technology - Accepted 2/13
NYU - Polytechnic - Accepted 4/18
Rutgers (Newark) - Rejected 4/15

Final Notes: I was pretty skeptical about my chances so I applied to a wide range of schools. As it turned out, I actually ended up with options so I visited everywhere I was considering. I would HIGHLY recommend this- you really don't know what it's going to be like at a school until you visit.

Also, try not to obsessively check gradcafe and this site, I promise it does not affect your chances of getting in. (I was not able to do this, but it's worth a shot)

In the end I'm super stoked to be attending Uconn- I think it's going to be the perfect fit for me.

Believe in yourself! You never know what school is looking for exactly you :)

Undergrad Institution: Brigham Young University-Idaho (private liberal arts school)
Major: Applied Mathematics
Minor: German
GPA: 3.92
Type of Student: Domestic, Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 162 (86%)
V: 167 (97%)
W: 4.5 (73%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 540 (21%)

Program Applying: Applied Mathematics

Research Experience: Internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory, two senior projects
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Certificate of Award for poster presentations at Los Alamos Student Symposium, and first place in the Physical Sciences / Applied Mathematics division at the BYU-Idaho Research and Creative Works conference.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Internship, math tutor, TA
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Nothing except that my recommenders like me :)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I've taken almost all of the math classes my school offers. Unfortunately none of them are grad classes - BYU-I doesn't have a graduate program. But I've done really well in all the classes, and with the research things of done I think I have pretty good chances.

Applying to Where:
University of Michigan - Mathematics - Rejected 2/28
New York University - Mathematics - Accepted 4/12 to the Master's program with no funding
Johns Hopkins University - Applied Math and Statistics - Rejected 3/8
Berlin Mathematical School - Mathematics - Rejected 1/28
University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia - Applied and Computational Mathematics - Rejected 2/25
Drexel University - Mathematics - Accepted 3/5 with a TAship and health insurance - Attending!
University of California - Irvine - Mathematics - Rejected 3/8

All of these are for the Ph D programs. I'm also applying for DHS-STEM, SULI, and NASA internships for this summer, so I'll post if I get in to one! Got into a summer program at PNNL in Washington! Great connection through my statistics professor.

Accepted for the SULI program: Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 10wk paid internship researching methods for recognizing human interaction in video data. Also accepted for the DHS-STEM internship program at Lawrence Livermore. I decided to go to Pacific Northwest instead, however, for a variety of reasons, not least of which was the option of working for the whole summer instead of just 10 weeks.

You sir are the embodiment of all hope and joy in the hearts of the humble applicants in this forum.

MIT is a beautiful place, though you may miss the weather of the west coast, and I think you'll love it. Congrats on the great admit.

@ Euler... did you receive an email from MIT first or did you log into your account to find that you have been accepted? And secondly, when you now log in to your account, does it show the status, i.e. the decision that has been made?

I'm sorry, I really don't know. Maybe check last year's gradcafe results?

In case this is directed at me: I received an e-mail. I didn't even know I could still log in to my account, but I just did after reading your comment and I don't see any mention there of the decision status.

Undergrad Institution: UK Russell Group University for undergrad and MSc (different universities)
Major(s): Maths
Minor(s): None.
GPA: 4.0 Equivalent for undergrad. Pass for MSc and distinction for MSc project.
Type of Student: International white male (UK).

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 163 (88%)
V: 154 (61%)
W: 4.0 (49%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Absolutely awful.

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Math PhD

Research Experience: Funded summer research project between 2rd and 3rd year of undergrad, final year project on invariant theory, MSc project on hyperelliptic curves and their application to cryptography. No publications.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: N/A

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I've taken a fair amount of graduate classes and shown I can work independently. But I graduated 6 years ago and I have been working as an actuary but found its not for me. So this raises the issue of having "been out the game too long". I'm interested in number theory - specifically algebraic number theory and the Langlands conjecture. This was mentioned in my personal statement and has influenced my institution choice.

Applying to Where:
Boston College - Rejected via email (I enquired) 4/24
Brown - Rejected via email (I enquired), website hasn't been updated 2/12
Calgary - Rejected via email (I enquired) 4/25
Columbia - Rejected via website (I was told to check the website for the changed status) 4/9
Illinois U-C - Rejected via email (I enquired) 2/13
Northwestern - Rejected via website, no email notification 2/8
U of British Columbia - Rejected via snail mail 3/16, letter is dated 2/26
Washington (Seattle) - Rejected (automatically generated email) 3/7

Durham - Given the lack of communication from them I am guessing this is a rejection as well.
Kings College - Rejected (received email informing me a decision had been made and to check the application website) 3/5
Sheffield University - Rejected (automatically generated email) 1/25
Warwick University - Rejected - I asked for feedback on my application and I was told I was a strong candidate but there were a lot of number theory candidates who had better grades, time away wasn't an issue and I came off well in my interviews with two potential supervisors 3/5

Comments: I'm guessing my poor subject score (31%) and having been away for some time (6 years) didn't help my applications. I think my MSc scores may have hurt my application (around 65% average) even though I had an almost perfect undergrad GPA and a high score on my MSc dissertation.

Since I have a job, a family and am not getting any younger, I won't be applying next year since I wouldn't be able to do much to improve my application - I could do another MSc but that costs money and I wouldn't want to move somewhere for just one year and then move again, it wouldn't allow me to improve my references either since applications would need to be completed so early on. I could work on the subject GRE but that is not a guaranteed admission.

Final thoughts (most things I should have done but didn't) - do well on the subject GRE, do as many grad courses as possible, get in contact with prospective advisors and have meaningful conversations about their research (this can be harder in some areas than others), do research projects with professors to get meaningful references. And above all else, don't take a break from maths! Working as an actuary doesn't count, the exams do not involve any rigorous maths!

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:I believe that my adviser (letter 1 writer) is well known/regarded in arithmetic geometry (one of the founders of the Arizona Winter School, spends each summer in Bonn, Germany at MPIM, etc.) I will graduate having taken a full year of graduate algebra (A in first half), a full year of graduate algebraic geometry (A+ in first half), and a year of graduate "geometry" (first semester general/algebraic topology (A-), second semester smooth manifolds by J.M. Lee)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: My path to math has been somewhat non-traditional; due to late start have really had to put my nose to the grindstone to be where I am today (with much higher grades Junior/Senior years than Freshman/Sophomore, this is supported by my transcripts). Not entirely sure whether this situation hinders or helps my case. Any comments would be appreciated!

Applying to Where:
UT Austin-Math PhD-Rejected via website 12 February, 2013
U Utah-Math PhD- Rejected via email 27 February, 2013
U Illinois Chicago-Math PhD
U Pennsylvania-Math PhD
UC San Diego-Math PhD
U Arizona-Math PhD

Here's to hoping that these schools can see past my abysmal MGRE score; best of luck to everyone!

Undergrad Institution: Big State School, good reputation in Math (Top 20-25)
Major(s):Math
Minor(s):Physics
GPA: Overall~3.54 Major~3.64
Type of Student: International Female Minority

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 164 (90%)
V: 158 (77%)
W: 3.0 (11%) Yeah...
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Absymal doesn't even begin to describe it.

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: None
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List, honors classes, other trivial stuff
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Directed Reading Program for 3 semesters in Galois Theory, Set Theory, and Ergodic Number Theory
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Independent study in intersection of Number Theory and Dynamical Systems
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I mentioned on my application that I took a break after my high school, and since returning to school I have had to juggle my responsibilities towards dependents with my studies. Decided in my junior year that I wanted to study Math, so I tried to highlight my "journey" of 4 years that started with PreCalc. One of my recommendations is from a very famous algebraist; the others are not too well-known but have observed my progressed closely.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

PhD: (All Pure Math)
CUNY Grad Center - Rejected
Brandeis - Rejected by email 3/7
Univ of Florida, Gainesville -Accepted by email 3/4 with TA
Dartmouth - Rejected by email 3/4
UMass, Amherst - Rejected by email 3/21

Masters:
Northeastern - Rejected
University of Delaware - Accepted with TA-ATTENDING
University of Connecticut - Rejected
Stony Brook - (The deadline for this in May, so this is an option for the worst-case scenario)

Remarks (before applying): I am mentally preparing myself for giving myself another year and trying again next year. I don't think I stand a great chance of getting into any of the doctoral programs given my subject score, and less-than-stellar gpa; I just want to test the waters since I have nothing to lose (except my confidence and the money spent on applications).

Extra remarks (4/22/2013): This whole process was very stressful, and I come out of it exhausted and with mixed feelings. It was hard for me to turn down Florida's offer, because the professors there were very cordial and welcoming, and the program was a good "fit" for me overall. However, due to logistical constraints because of family and dependents, I decided to take Delaware's offer. I think a Masters program will be a good experience to elevate my profile when I re-apply, and I'm so grateful to have received a funded offer! I am glad that I will be reasonably close to my friends and family, and continue to be engaged in other non-math activities that I am passionate about. Good luck to everyone!

To the two guys directly above this post (and anyone else who might know): do you have any idea if Washington has already sent out the bulk of their responses? Did they mention anything like this in their acceptance/rejection emails?

Does that mean no word on funding, or are they simply not funding you? Did you apply for Masters or Ph.D.? Thanks!

Have you checked your Buckeye Link page for OSU? That's how I found out I was accepted: I didn't receive anything officially from them.

UCSD:
As I have external funding, I didn't ask them for fellowship support, so there is no word on funding in the email. I think this is the reason why I got accepted to their phd program so early.

Ohio State:
Yeah, I check that website every hours (except when I am sleeping) but it is still the same. I think they do not care anything about my external funding as they mention in the department admission website (FAQ part).

Congratulations on your Ohio State result and hope you get into your most favorite program.

When you check your application status does it say "Incomplete?" Mine says that and it says they received everything (resume, grades, POS) but it says my letters are still incomplete when I know my references submitted them by the deadline...

So I e-mailed them and they told me that "no one's file is complete till Mid-Feb and we decide in March" which is a clearly a lie as they have already admitted students... granted I applied for the Master's in MathBio... but according to thegradcafe.com, there have been people admitted to that program as well... -_-

I got the same response. I think it is just their excuse and when they have filled up their spots with applicants they wanted , they will turn around and give you rejection. that is why it is a tricky business!!!!!

My application is still incomplete as well because the Department Internal Procedure is the only one thing that says incomplete.

I also think that they already sent out the first wave of acceptance (for pure math) but don't know why they told you like that. Maybe, "allin1" is right.

Hope you get good news soon.
